Makeba Lloyd

Makeba Lloyd is the founder of Scentonomy and Butter By Keba, two tech enabled wellness and personal care brands focused on highly effective personal care products and holistic wellness services, curated for the workplace, events, commercial and residential spaces. After a trip through Ancient Egypt, she discovered the benefits of engaging the therapeutic practice of aromatherapy and perfumery, not only as a self-care routine, but also a method of creating her own scentscapes (a term coined by Egyptology Professor Dora Goldsmith) using products she'd formulate under the brand Butter By Keba. Later on her journey she started Scentonomy. Creating and building the platform stems from her own experience as a full-time caregiver to her Mother, who as a healthcare professional, was a huge advocate for holistic complementary health care options.

Lakenda Wallace

Lakenda Wallace, the creative mind behind Modern Peasant, a natural perfume brand. Lakenda is an alchemist perfumer who masterfully blends fresh herbs, flowers, and aromatherapy to craft exquisite multi-layered perfumes and room scents. A true storyteller, Lakenda uses her aromatic creations to challenge conventional beauty standards. She has served as a Board Member for the Institute for Art and Olfaction and twice as a judge for the internationally renowned Olfaction Awards. She has had her work included in olfactive art exhibits including Nose Music, a musically-inspired perfume sample kit by DubLabs, Scent + Memory at the Institute of Art + Olfaction, and Ten Encounters: The Meeting of Ochun + Ogun, at Olfactory Keller Art, NYC. Most recently, Modern Peasant is highlighted in the Essence.com article, Black Women Perfumers on the Power of Crafting Fragrances.

Terry Carter

Terry Carter is the Chief Perfumer and Founder of Travertine Spa Atelier. Terry brings more than 20 years of experience and extensive perspective to the table. He is in collaboration with Osmo Labs on the forefront of fragrance technology and a Perfumer in Residence at the Craft Contempory. Trained in Paris, Terry is an accomplished legal scholar, businessman, judge for the Art and Olfaction awards. Serving as an advisor to Blackperfumers.com is how he gives back. He custom formulates fragrance and body care products for ultra-luxe resorts, multinational corporations and is a perfumery educator. He blends bespoke perfumes for celebrities but rarely name drops. Founder and Director of Legacy Scent Academy, Elle’s work has touched lives over the past five years through her endeavors to increase consumer awareness of Black-owned fragrance brands, provide industry support for aspiring fragrance creators, and to build opportunities for fragrance entrepreneurs. Recipient of the 2023 Art and Olfaction Award for Contribution to Scent Culture, she is also founder of BlackPerfumersDirectory.com, an Indie Member of The Fragrance Foundation, and a member of the Black-Owned Fragrance Week planning team. She was recently highlighted in an Essence article featuring Black women perfumers.

What is Legacy Scent Academy?

Legacy Scent Academy is a youth fragrance education program focused on reducing barriers to entry in the multi-billion dollar fragrance industry. We believe that by introducing teens to basic fundamentals of fragrance creation in hands-on workshops with professionals, we will inspire new talent and creativity that supports future leaders in the industry.

How does Legacy Scent Academy work?

Legacy Scent Academy works primarily with schools, community-based organizations, and other groups where we bring our free educational programs on-site to your facility or venue so that youth can learn about and create fragrance in a familiar, local environment. To bring us to your class, youth program, or youth event, please fill out the Interest Form below and we can get started! Once a workshop date is approved, we'll supply our facilitators with the necessary items and ingredients to conduct the fragrance creation workshop at your site.

Who can participate in Legacy Scent Academy programs?

All young people between the ages of 12 and 19 are welcome to participate in Legacy Scent Academy programs. Youth 17 and under must complete a Waiver Release form that the host site returns to Legacy Scent Academy prior to a scheduled workshop date.

Who is behind Legacy Scent Academy?

A program of BlackPerfumers, Legacy Scent Academy and its curriculum guide were created and developed by Elle N., founder of BlackPerfumers.com and BlackPerfumersDirectory.com. Join Lakenda Wallace of Modern Peasant Beauty and create your own fragrance!

Introduction to Natural Perfumery

Where: OAKLAND, CA

Introduction to Natural Perfumery will introduce students to the different types of ingredients used in natural perfumery, as well as an overview of how they are extracted and combined for use. We will discuss the components of a classic alcohol-based perfume, as well as oil-based perfumes, discussing the needs for natural preservatives and fixatives which will help the scent last in the bottle and on the skin. The class will also include folklore, herbology, and plant safety basics, as well as the basics of research and discerning sources. Students will have the opportunity to interact with ingredients and create their own custom perfume they can take home.

Scent & Story: A Perfume Writing Playshop

Aromatherapy Blending for Emotional Wellbeing Workshop

Where: NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK

A 1.5 hour workshop for young people between 16-24 years of age.

What will we do? Scentonomy will provide a 15-20 minute Aromatherapy presentation on:

● What is aromatherapy?

● How does it work?

● What materials are used to make and apply aromatherapy?

● What are essential oils?

● How can we use them?

● What kind of tools can be made to apply aromatherapy

We will ask students to share:

● How they feel aromatherapy can work for them.

● Where and when would they apply aromatherapy tools?

● What benefits would they like to experience from applying their aromatherapy tools?

Students take notes and determine where and how they would like to apply aromatherapy in their lives and which essential oils they will use. Students will be guided on how to formulate their personalized essential oil blends. We (Scentonomy team) and participants create essential oil blends in the form of aroma roll-ons using the supplies we provide.
